Editing-Secret Diary of A Call Girl

This is the video clip if needed:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=auSAGvpM7W8

Belle opens the door and wee see a eyeline match straight away as she greets Blake, and his father. In the first 28 seconds there is a series of transitions that take place including continuity editing which would not be recognized unless you know what it is. There is a lot of shot reverse shot as it goes back and forward from Belle to Blake and his dad. At this moment a big tension is built as it is awkward for belle to look at so it is made so she is looking at both. This makes it harder for us to realize that there is a tension between them but we tell from the way they are speaking and the atmosphere that is built.

When Belle leaves the room there is another cut and then two match on action shots where Blake's dad picks him up from the wheelchair and them lays him on the bed. this helps blend the cut in between of him walking to the bed from the wheelchair. There is another transition when Belle enters the room but stays out the way in the corner while she watches the father and son. Blake's dad soon leaves and when he does Belle starts to lock the door and we see Blake look at the door then a eye line match comes in as she realizes that he feels very nervous so she unlocks it. Another set of match on action cuts come into place as she offers a drink and then she is on the bed with the drinks.

A cross cut comes in when we see Blake's dad arriving at the van, he then looks up and we get a eye line match of him looking at what we think is the apartment where the two are. Then there is a set of jump cuts from him turning on/off the radio, closing opening the window, moving his chair back and forward and pressing the horn. This is to show he is uneasy about what is happening in the apartment.

We get another cross cut and now the couple are more intimate and we see slow transitions and another match on action applies when Belle asks Blake should she take off his t-shirt to make him feel comfortable and he sits up and then the camera is at a high angle shot taking the action.

Sound- Secret Diary of A Call Girl

This is the video clip used if needed:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=auSAGvpM7W8

At the beginning of the clip there is not much sound going on other then the dialogue between the characters. there is an awkward atmosphere between the characters. the conversation starts between Belle (call girl) and Blake(customer) and after greeting Blake introduces his dad who is pushing his wheelchair. the tension between the three is anxiously scary as there is no full on eye contact.

There is an ambient sound in between the dialogue when Blake asks his dad to pass the envelope and there is a rustle. this also reminds us that this isn't any old function, it is a business accossiated encounter. There is still the awkwardness between every character. Blake's dad leaves and Belle starts to lock the door but from the sound Blake's attention is aroused and feels uncomfortable with the door locked.

The dad then goes to his van which in the van he cannot stop fidgeting . He turns on the radio and we can hear him listening to classical music but his mind is full of anxiety as he is worried about his son, he cannot stop but carries on moving his chair back and forth , making the window go up and down and he accidently presses the horn. These noises show us how much the dad is feeling awkward and worried about his son which makes him very nervous.

A soundbridge is brought into the scene at the end and is played by a harmonica. It is a very sad type of music eg. the blues. This starts to make us feel sorry for the boy as he says he has never been touched in that kind off way. The song does not go with the mood they are in as she is a very sexual character and the music seems to represent his mood of he doesn't actually know what he is doing.

Camerawork on Monarch of The Glen

The video clip above is what was used if needed:

The camerawork in the monarch of the glen is cleverly used to represent the age of the characters and how they affect each other. As the clip starts a establishing shot is being taken and a dolly shot is used to to follow the characters loading the truck with the tools. It zooms out of the focus of one group and shows all the adults carrying tools and doing something practical.

As the scene carries on it shows a two shot and moves on to a boy and girl, the boy is sweeping the floor and from this i can generate that it is a chore a child would do around the house and the front garden and the girl who looks as if she is skipping out of the doorway like a little child would do. As it carries on there is a medium shot of the girl as she talks to the boy and a over the shoulder shot as it focuses on them both staring at each other and talking.

Moving on in the clip you get a close up of the girl in the vehicle looking around as if she is confused of what she is actually doing. Her body language is emphasized as she looks very stern and is wondering what she has to do. A car crash had happened and a high angle shot was used to show how and where the crash happened, Amy was the first to get out of the car and scurry along to check if the other person was alright as it is quicker for a child to move then an adult.

In this scene it goes from a medium shot of the group to a medium long shot of the old man showing he is older than the rest meaning he is of some importance. When the teacher says why he is here the camera moves into a medium shot because what he says is of importance. As the two men enter the room the camera moves from the corner and gets closer up to them. When the father figure is told about Amy not sitting her exams he walks out the room and is takes Amy away from the grandmother figure and the camera switches to a close up shot to a medium shot of the man as this is saying he is a lot older than the girl and is of importance.

The camera cuts in and out of different frames when the men are working it shows that there is only men and women there and no children showing the age group. As the camera pans around the Amy's room it shows us her age and we can see she is a young girl as her room is decorated in pink and magazines.

Mise En Scene- How does this help represent the age in the Monarch of Then Glen

Above is the video clip I used if needed:

From watching the clip of the monarch of the glen the setting is a old english town situated in the country side showing a sense of quietness and no noise. The way the adults are dressed in the opening is , they are wearing workwear and they are caryying tools loading up the truck showing a sense of age representation. Then a girl (Amy) is introduced into the clip and she and another boy are wearing casual clothes an everyday teenager would wear showing the case of adults working and kids just being there for appearence. At this moment there is a awkwardness between the boy and girls eyes.

As the clip goes on you can see Amys uncomfortability when she is given the keys to drive into town. She is very uneasy showing she really doesnt know how to drive and has a accident with the headteacher of her school which reveals her age and mental ability as she is 16 and trys defying the adults around her. she starts becoming immature as she shouts and stomps around the house. the father figure in the clip takes the teacher to a room where it looks as if only adults would go and they have a drink of brandy.

While this happens Amy is planning to get away and we see her room is full of pink and is decorated as a school girl would. there is magazines on the bed showing her age as they are very girly teen magazines which you wouldnt find a older girl reading. She leaves two notes on the bed with a teddy bear showing her age group as the writing is very designed and fancy. Her behaviour is very childish and this shows her very vivid imagination.

The key concepts of AS Media

What are they?

There are four key media concepts:
  • Media language
  • Representation
  • Audience
  • Institution
Media Language
Media language is the way the film/clip/image is showed to us. In the exam you have to analyse the following. You look at the cinematogrophy (the way the camera is used, close shot, mid shot, birds eye veiw etc. Editing is part of media language . This is were sounds , digital effects etc are added into the clip. Sound is another. Diegesis is the time space, diegetic is where the sound in the background is heard by the actors (tyres screeching), non diegetic is where is were the actors cannot hear it (bond theme tune where he steps onto the set). The last one we have to look at for the exam is Mise en scene, this is everything in the scene, the setting, lighting, , costume, props etc.

Representation
It is how people in the film are portrayed.. In the exam we will have to look at one of the following age, gender,, ethnicity, sexuality, regional identity,ability/disability,class/social status.

Audience and Institution
We will get a qustion on the film industry using two case study films.
